Dutch film composer and music producer Felix Houtman (2004) has been active since 2011 in the music industry. Felix has always had an affection for music, from 2011 until 2018 he has played the drums. After seven years of drumming and performing live around his hometown Capelle aan den IJssel, he went into new endeavours.
A new love was found in music production, he started out making loops on his laptop. In quick pace has Felix learned music production by himself but wanted eager to learn more in-depth about it. In 2020 he signed up for music study in Rotterdam and got accepted to his surprise. The three-year study has brought him a lot of theoretical knowledge, industry connections and work.
He made several rescores for trailers and music for short films. Felix is not afraid to collaborate with people from different countries.
“It is inspiring to work with people from around the world and to listen what story they have to tell, personally and musically”.
For his single release, ‘The Absence of Light’ he has worked with Tonion, a cellist who is very well-known in the lo-fi genre. For the trailer rescore ‘Mindhunter’, Felix has worked with a violinist from Ukraine. The recordings were made during war at the beginning of 2022. Even though he had to flee his city, Taras managed to record an improvisational violin part. The recording quality may be lower but it tells a true story.
Felix is known for his harmonies, melancholic music, and long sustained sorrowful cello parts. The composition of certain soundtracks can be difficult, but it inspires him to work more minimalistic. Nowadays, is it very easy to use a lot of sounds in music, that is the reason why Felix often finds it more interesting and challenging to use less sounds.
June, 2023, Felix graduated and received his secondary vocational education degree in July. His plans are to continue working with film making students and creators of film festival films. Besides working is Felix currently studying in Enschede at Kaliber Kunstenschool - MediaMusic.
